The eclectic styles on the album are in parallel to varied dinosaurs. Croft (and family in hot pursuit) mixes daring, avant garde pieces such as 'When the world was young' with down-to-earth melodic charm on 'Sail away'. The genius of Mike Croft is that he has the audacity to mix the hard stomping rock of 'Tyrannosaurus Rex' (with its terrifying, knee-trembling bassline and blood-curdling sound effects) with 'Lonely Pteradactyl' - a composition of great magnitude, as the sympathetic vocals perfectly highlight the Pteradactyl's sorrow and inner beauty.
Croft's family are obviously a deep inspiration to the man himself - he seems to excel in the company of his brood. The whole family are inflicted upon the record like flies to a turd.
Mike, as he likes to be addressed, never flinches from his duty in informing the record buying public of the heart rendering plight of the beautiful beasts as heard in his extended spoken tribute which concludes the album.
